Chaofeng Liu's dedication to understanding complex systems began at a young age, driven by a passion for mathematics and data. Growing up in Beijing, China, he became fascinated by the patterns that could be found in numbers and the logic that governed them. This interest led him to pursue a Bachelor's and Master’s in Probability and Statistics at Peking University, one of China’s most respected institutions. During his time there, his excellence in his field earned him multiple awards, including the Outstanding Student Fellowship and Young Scientist Award, underscoring his academic strength and leadership. As Chaofeng advanced in his studies, his focus shifted from theoretical statistics to practical applications. Motivated to make a tangible impact, particularly in healthcare, he moved to the United States to continue his education. He earned a Ph.D. in Biostatistics from UCLA and later pursued an Executive MBA from Purdue University. The combination of these degrees allowed him to not only master the technical aspects of biostatistics but also gain the strategic business acumen needed to navigate the complexities of the pharmaceutical and healthcare sectors. Chaofeng’s professional journey in the pharmaceutical industry spans over two decades, with key contributions to oncology, neuroscience, and rare diseases. His career began at Eli Lilly, where he quickly became a leader in statistical innovation and clinical development. He continued to advance his career at major global pharmaceutical companies, including Novartis Pharmaceuticals, Forest Laboratories, PAREXEL, and Astellas Pharmaceuticals. At each organization, he demonstrated a unique ability to lead teams and drive forward complex drug development initiatives. One of the defining moments of Chaofeng's career occurred at Astellas Pharmaceuticals, where he led the development of Gilteritinib, a first-in-class treatment for acute myeloid leukemia (AML). He was key in guiding the drug through early clinical trials and helped secure FDA Accelerated Approval. This milestone ultimately allowed the drug to be available to needy patients. His leadership throughout the regulatory process, which included approvals from the FDA, PMDA, and EMA, helped bring an innovative treatment to market for a serious and often fatal condition. Throughout his career, Chaofeng has championed innovation in drug development, particularly his work in adaptive trial designs. These innovative designs allow clinical trials to adjust to emerging data, streamlining the development process and making it more responsive to patient needs. His contributions to adaptive trial design have been widely recognized, with numerous publications in respected journals such as The New England Journal of Medicine and Lancet Oncology. Chaofeng’s commitment to the field extends beyond his work in the pharmaceutical industry. For over a decade, he has been an adjunct professor in the Department of Statistics at Purdue University, where he shares his knowledge and practical experience with students. He has also contributed to the broader statistical community, serving as President and Program Chair of the ASA Northern Indiana Chapter, where he helped foster collaboration among statisticians and healthcare professionals. As Chaofeng looks toward the future, his work continues to impact the pharmaceutical industry. Despite his numerous achievements and accolades, including the Astellas President’s Award, he remains focused on his mission to improve healthcare outcomes. His ongoing contributions to biostatistics, clinical research, and drug development will continue to shape the industry for years.
